Molteni Farmaceutici chooses the SAP S/4HANA Cloud architecture: high reliability and dedicated Var Group services

Historical excellence in the increasingly global pharmaceuticals market

In 1892, a young pharmacist from the Marches region was made manager of Farmacia Leoni Molteni, one of the oldest pharmacies in Florence. Since that time, numerous investments, collaborations with university centres and constant technological innovation have resulted in the creation of Molteni Farmaceutici Spa, a pole of excellence in European pharmaceutical production, thanks to its competitive specialisation in the development, production and marketing of opioids. With more than 300 employees and a constantly growing turnover of € 75 million, Molteni Farmaceutici is today a modern, responsible and international company that guarantees quality of life and the right to appropriate therapy with solutions for the treatment of pain and addiction.
The Full Outsourcing Formula for agile and carefree business
The opportunity for an important milestone in the well-established partnership between Molteni and Var Group arose when the company decided to migrate its ERP management platform to SAP, a move that required the renewal of its technological infrastructure. Purchasing on-premises hardware and installing it at the company’s Florence headquarters would have entailed not only a significant initial investment, but also burdensome day-to-day management of the systems, the need for special training of its IT personnel, and the high expense of infrastructure maintenance. With the objective of ensuring excellent reliability, while also being able to concentrate on its business strategies, Molteni chose Var Group to evaluate a Cloud & Managed Services solution offering High Availability, Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery solutions that would allow them to optimise their resources and investments in total security, delegating the management of SAP solutions completely to Var BMS, the Var Group’s SAP competence centre. Var Group's technical support, which also covers networking requirements, allows Molteni to save on IT costs and free their staff from repetitive control tasks to concentrate on more strategic responsibilities.
The SAP S/4HANA cloud architecture and a dedicated team to manage it from A to Z empower Molteni
After a thorough analysis of its internal needs and criticalities, the choice fell on SAP S/4 HANA in Cloud, a solution based on the cloud oriented infrastructure directly available from the Var Group Data Centre. Thanks to the project, Molteni has benefitted from all the scalability and flexible resource allocation of Cloud Computing. The preliminary study and the continuously developed operational infrastructure in SAP-certified data centres has provided high standards of reliability, performance and security.

This configuration, supported by advanced data backup infrastructure, guarantees full operational continuity, and is designed in such a way that each element is redundant, thus avoiding disruptions.

The Molteni project includes proactive monitoring services and 24-hour system support, as well as complete scheduling, implementation and backup management services. This has been provided in an IAAS perspective in order to achieve the twofold objective of keeping their resources focused on value-added processes, while also being able to rely on the excellent reliability and security of the platform.

For the company, the fully managed solution is charged with a monthly fee, thus avoiding high investment up front, while remaining flexibly adapted to the business’s future growth requirements. This scalability is combined with levels of security (greater than those achievable with on-premises infrastructure) with well-defined SLAs.

Var Group and Molteni have established a change-oriented partnership, covering both the client’s day-to-day needs and the large projects it plans for the future. The Var Group's vision, comprehensive offering and financial strength assure the partnership the continuity it requires to face future challenges.
